| How to Train your Pet to Use the Door
An easy and fun way to introduce your pet to their new Ideal Pet Door is to make it very rewarding for them to go through it the first few times.
After they become familiar with the door and are rewarded for using it, your pet will be able to come and go as they please and the whole concept will make absolute sense to them. If you try to force your pet through the door you may frighten them - so it's worth taking your time.
Pets respond well to positive training methods. Using a food or toy to lure your pet through the door is a great way to coax it through. Always praise and reward your pet for going through the door. If you are patient and encouraging they will soon understand what you want them to do and if it is sufficiently rewarding they will do it again, and again!
You may want to introduce you pet to passing through the flap by holding it open at first, then gradually lower it with each successful pass through until your pet is pushing it open itself.
Have a person the pet loves and trusts on the other side of the door and have that person call the pet the first couple of times through; this gives the pet a reason to go through the door. If the person on the other side plays with the pet and gives them good treats the pet should soon be happily passing to and fro.
For electronic pet doors it is sometimes advisable to help your pet make an association of the electronic sound with something desireable. Some pets may be happier if they can hear the sound at a distance and be rewarded with special treats several times before teaching them to go through the door.
